Top Five Beatles Songs (In No Particular Order)
64
I’ve been a fan of The Beatles for most of my life. I can remember being in high school and going to the local Best Buy to purchase my next album from them to add to my collection. It was my own personal Beatlemania. In total, I have 10 albums from The Beatles and over 185 songs. Being my favorite musical band of all time, and the recent ability to download The Beatles songs online through iTunes, I felt that it is needed for me to introduce to you, my top five Beatles songs (in no particular order).
1) She’s Leaving Home (Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band)
We’ll start the list with “She’s Leaving Home”. A beautiful song about a girl who leaves home. Easy enough, right? With Paul McCartney singing the verses and John Lennon doing the chorus, this song is one of their best songs that no one has really appreciated.
2) In My Life (Rubber Soul)
Next, is “In My Life”. A song on The Beatles 1965 Album, “Rubber Soul” written and sung by John Lennon. John states he wrote this when an English journalist said that he ‘should write songs about his childhood’. It’s another example of a Beatles song that isn’t known for its catchy, poppy tunes- but at the same time, a good song that always leaves me singing it after its piano opening by Paul McCartney.
3) Maxwell’s Silver Hammer (Abbey Road)
What’s the best Beatles song about a boy who is killing everyone around him with a silver hammer? It’ll have to be “Maxwell’s Silver Hammer” which comes in at number three. A silly song, that caused a lot of friction between the members of The Beatles. Taking over three days to complete, George Harrison and John Lennon openly argued that the time spent on one song was too long, but Paul was resistant and had the band keep playing until they finally got it correct.
4) Happiness is a Warm Gun (White Album)
Coming in at number four is “Happiness is a Warm Gun”, a song that could be interpreted many different ways. For example, it could be a reference to heroin, seeing how heroin was a drug used regularly by The Beatles. Another meaning could be about the lead singer, John Lennon’s, sexual relations with Yoko Ono. It could even be about a gun that had just been shot off. My opinion? John Lennon’s relationship with Yoko.
The song itself is perfect. Blending three different styles of songs and flowing them together to create one epic song takes a talent that only The Beatles could pull off so well.
5) Across the Universe (Let It Be)
My last song comes from the last Beatles album, “Let It Be”. Across the Universe is a rather slower song, dealing with The Beatles interest in meditation in the mid to late 1960’s. John Lennon referred to the song as the best he ever wrote. He stated in a Rolling Stone interview, "It's one of the best lyrics I've written. In fact, it could be the best. It's good poetry, or whatever you call it, without chewin' it.” I mean, what song that’s being beamed across our own universe wouldn’t make anyone’s list of greatest songs?
